What Makes Me Bounce
Published: 09-Dec-2018

This is what makes me bounce, and not in a ‘Yay, this is fun’ kind of way.

The current trend of landing on any page on any site you care to imagine, and immediately a pop up window that takes over the entire screen appears. Usually it asks you to subscribe to content. Like I need another email cluttering my inbox.

And this screen consumption is no different depending on whether you are browsing on a desktop or on a mobile.

Are you serious?

Why would anyone want to subscribe to a site after one landing? Are you that desperate for attention? And if I do subscribe, will I even read your newsletter?

These days, when I land on a page, and if a screen-consuming dialog appears in:

  • the first second
  • as soon as my mouse moves up and away from page content
  • as soon as I scroll down

You can bet I will never come back to your web site. Ever.

The questions you need to ask yourself when trying to attract people:

  • why do people want to come to my web site in the first place?
  • what would make me want to come back?

You can bet that “because you cover your content with a ‘subscribe now’ dialog” is not at the top of their list! Seriously, if people don’t come back to your website more than once, it’s because there are better web sites offering the same thing. So, either up your game, or close the hell down.
